Mary's Yoga Path
Mary studied Shambhava Yoga and Meditation at Colorado’s Shoshoni Yoga Ashram, and is certified in Hatha Yoga. She has been teaching yoga to a wide variety of audiences since 2005. Her asana practice begins with a strong foundation in body awareness and alignment, then moves deeper, allowing you to explore your own personal experience of yoga through mindfulness and surrender. Her intention is to offer intelligent Hatha and Vinyasa sequencing and straight forward philosophy that is accessible for any body. She invites people of all ages, shapes and fitness levels to join her classes and is experienced in providing asana options and modifications to meet the unique needs of each individual.
Mary was inspired to become a yoga teacher because of the positive impact yoga had on her own life. This nourishing practice has become essential to Mary as a way to heal her own body from years of competitive gymnastics, and to encourage self-compassion and acceptance. Mary’s background in Exercise Physiology informs her practice with a deep understanding of anatomy and therapeutic lifestyle medicine. She believes in the power of mindfulness-based meditation as a practice to build our mental and emotional awareness, cultivate compassion for ourselves and others and calm the overwhelmed mind in our world of constant stimulation and stress.
Mary is honored by the unique opportunities she has had to share yoga in many diverse settings. She has taught yoga to patients recovering from cancer, people living with brain injuries, MS, back pain, depression, stroke, and sports rehabilitation. She has facilitated yoga classes in several physical therapy clinics, retirement homes, studios, clinics, schools, weddings and corporate settings in Colorado and Seattle. Before moving to Montana in summer of 2016, she enjoyed creating group coaching classes in Mindful Movement and Stress Reduction for Vera Whole Health Clinic for Seattle Children’s Hospital and hosted yoga and rock climbing retreats in the North Cascade mountains to help empower self-growth and liberate students from fear, anxiety, and self sabotaging thoughts that can effect daily life.
Mary brings an accepting, humble, and light-hearted spirit to her classes. She believes it’s important to be aware of your thoughts and emotions during asana practice, because they can serve as a metaphor for how we embrace our life experiences, and how we react to those around us. It’s also important to Mary to smile, laugh, and not take ourselves too seriously. Mary’s Hatha teaching style offers opportunity to balance the physical and energetic body, sooth the nervous system, strengthen, heal and support the body, mind and heart. She relies on traditional teachings from B.S.K. Iyengar and Swami Sivananda and John Kabit-Zinn's Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction to inform her teachings and has been inspired by the creative flow and divine energy from teachers such as Sean Corn, Shiva Rae, and Shannon Page.
